Polish FM praises Trump's Middle East peace deal

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Monday praised US President Donald Trump’s negotiating style and the substance of his peace plan for Gaza, saying both had succeeded in ending violence in the Middle East and securing the release of hostages held by Hamas.

"The content and the negotiation style of President Trump have proven successful," Sikorski told reporters at a news conference in Warsaw.

"The United States used its power and authority in the service of peace," he added.

His comments came after Hamas released the remaining Israeli hostages kidnapped during the October 7, 2023, attacks, under the first phase of a ceasefire deal brokered by the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

It said in return Israel agreed to free 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and more than 1,700 detainees from Gaza.

"We are glad that the killing and destruction have stopped, and that both hostages and prisoners have been released,” Sikorski said.

He added that Poland has long supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while condemning both Hamas’ acts of terrorism and Israel’s excessive use of force in Gaza and the West Bank.

"The people of Gaza have already returned to the ruins of their homes," Sikorski said. "That seems to settle a major concern—the Palestinians will not be displaced. So the two nations, each numbering in the millions, must find a way to live side by side in dignity."

"What has happened strengthens the argument for a two-state solution, which Poland supports," he told reporters.

Trump said on Monday that the war between Israel and Hamas was over, following the release of the remaining Israeli hostages under a US-brokered ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.

"The forces of chaos that have plagued the region are totally defeated," Trump said in a speech before Israel’s parliament.

He added that "this is not only the end of a war," but "the end of an age of terror and death" in the Middle East.

Later on Monday, Trump travelled to Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, where leaders from more than 20 countries endorsed his peace plan at a summit.

At the opening of the summit, Trump and the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and Turkey signed a peace declaration, pledging to "work collectively to implement and sustain this legacy," the Reuters news agency reported.

Poland in late September said that Trump’s 20-point peace plan for the Gaza Strip was "a realistic and bold attempt" to end the two-year-old conflict between Israel and Hamas and create conditions for lasting peace in the Middle East.
